Gifted and talented students are often underserved in the classroom because they can tackle the grade-level content rather easily. In this age of high-stakes testing, teachers are more concerned about those in danger of failing the test. Sometimes, teachers don't even have the understanding of giftedness to know how to challenge students.
The Learner-Active, Technology-Infused Classroom is an environment that meets the needs of all students, allowing gifted learners to explore learning at much higher levels. Gifted students may be able to move beyond the teacher's problem-based task to identify their own content-related problems of interest to solve. In addressing gifted learners, teachers need to carefully craft their rubrics aimed at Moving Students Towards the Expert Column. They need to designing learning activities that ensure Leveling Up Through Cognitive Progression, and leveling up to high levels of cognitive understanding. And they need to ensure they are asking many higher-order questions in their facilitation.
